Ånneland Mattress Review
The Ånneland Mattress is a basic, innerspring mattress with a medium-firm feel.
Purchase and delivery
The Ånneland Mattress can be purchased through the IKEA website or at any of their 12 stores Australia-wide. Delivery costs will depend on your location, but a typical delivery cost to a metropolitan area is $49.
The mattress is roll packed which should make it easier to transport.
This mattress has a plain appearance with a white colour theme. It sits 24cm high which slightly lower than many other innerspring mattresses.
Comfort and support
The Ånneland Mattress uses an outer cover made of 100 % polyester (100% recycled) that also includes ticking (cloth) underneath. This ticking is made of 100% polypropylene and helps to add softness to the mattress.
The top comfort section of the mattress includes a layer of highly resilient polyurethane foam (cold foam) 35 kg/cubic metre), a layer of polyurethane memory foam 50 kg/cubic metre, and a layer of polyurethane foam 28 kg/cubic metre.
These foam layers offer a level of comfort that could be described as adequate. This mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals.
Our expert reviewers all agreed that this mattress has a medium-firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
The Ånneland Mattress uses a steel pocket spring system. This support structure feels fairly basic but should provide adequate back support for most people.
The Ånneland Mattress responds nicely to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness in the ‘optimal’ zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be any trouble.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality of this mattress is fair. The mattress construction and materials are basic and the foam components feels unsophisticated.
The overall build quality of this mattress is fair.
The cover of this mattress is removable and washable. The cover can be separated into two parts, making it easier to fit into the washing machine.
Edge support is a little lacking, so care must be taken to not roll off the edge during sleep.
Partner disturbance is noticeable, but certainly not significant. As always though, motion transfer will vary depending on the mattress size and the size of the occupants of the bed.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Ånneland Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty.
We do not recommend the Ånneland Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Ånneland Mattress is available in all 4 sizes (Queen, double, single and 180 x 200 cm) so it should suit all adult sleeping situations.

Final verdict
The Ånneland Mattress is an average mattress that is somewhat unremarkable. There are better options at this price point.

All of our mattresses can be used immediately, but keep in mind that a packaged mattress only regains its full shape and comfort after approximately 72 hours. Your body also needs a couple of weeks to adapt to the new mattress.
Sometimes the mattress has a noticeable smell when you open the packaging. The smell isn’t harmful or toxic and disappears over time. Airing and vacuuming the mattress helps to eliminate the smell faster.
