ALDI Mattress Review
The ALDI Mattress (labelled the ‘Estelle Mattress’ by SOHL Furniture) is sold at ALDI during certain ‘Special Buys’ periods. It has an incredibly low price that makes it an attractive option for many Aussie bed shoppers.
In reality though, this mattress is notably deficient in comfort and quality. There are definitely better options in this price bracket (see our recommended alternatives listed further down).

Purchase and delivery
This mattress falls into the mattress in a box category and can only be purchased during specific ‘Special Buys‘ periods. It’s worth noting that even during these periods, the ALDI Mattress is unavailable in certain locations.
As with other bed in a box products, this mattress comes compressed (by heavy machinery) into a cardboard box. We purchased our queen size ALDI Mattress from the ALDI Busselton store (WA) and managed to fit the box into a small SUV (Volkswagen Tiguan). We would highly recommend having two (strong) people on hand to place the box into a car.
The box (queen size mattress) weighs 40 kgs with dimensions of 158 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 32 cm deep, so make sure your vehicle has the necessary space. Keep in mind that almost all other mattress in a box products in Australia offer free delivery to your door.
Removing the ALDI Mattress from its packaging was relatively straight forward, but again, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box. Unpacking this mattress should only take 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before testing.
To get a closer look at this mattress, you can see ALDI’s short product video below:
In terms of appearance, the ALDI Mattress looks cheap and unsophisticated. It uses a white, black, and grey colour theme with Estelle brand embroidery at the base of the mattress.
Comfort and support
This mattress contains a polyester fabric on top, which sits over a layer of memory foam and a layer of comfort foam.
Although the product description claims that the “cushiony Euro pillow top gives extra comfort”, our testing revealed a distinct ‘hardness’ in all sleeping positions and it is far from luxurious.
In terms of a firmness rating, our team rated it as a ‘medium – firm’ feel and a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
The ALDI Mattress uses a pocket spring system that feels flimsy and very basic. Its level of spinal support is unconvincing and it wouldn’t be suitable for larger people (over 100 kgs).
The ALDI Mattress seems to respond excessively to normal sleep movements. This is typical of cheap spring systems, and means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) feels noticeably unstable.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
As we alluded to earlier, the main selling point of the ALDI Mattress is its extraordinary low price. A queen size mattress sells for $259, quite remarkable when you consider that the average mattress in a box in Australia sells for around $1,000.
With that said, the ALDI Mattress comes with a number of limitations that need to be considered before you get seduced by its low price.
The ALDI Mattress comes with a number of limitations that need to be considered before you get seduced by its low price.
When it comes to raw product quality, the ALDI Mattress falls short in all areas. The external fabric feels unrefined, and you can easily feel the springs through the side of the mattress. As we alluded to earlier, its aesthetic presentation is as dull as you get.
Edge support is also poor, so don’t expect to be able to sleep close to the mattress edge. Motion transfer is also significant, so a restless partner will likely be a problem.
Along with its mediocre levels of comfort and support, the 1 year warranty is significantly inferior to most of its competitors (who generally offer a 10 year warranty).
Furthermore, the ALDI Mattress does not come with a ‘free trial period’ – most of ALDI’s competitors offer a trial period of around 100 nights, and they will also come and collect your mattress from your home as part of the refund process.
Another thing to consider with the ALDI Mattress is its lack of any ‘non-toxic’ or eco-friendly certifications. Most reputable mattress in a box products have been certified by companies such as CertiPUR-US and GECA who have tested mattresses for toxicity, harmful chemicals, and environmental sustainability.
Now we aren’t suggesting that the ALDI Mattress is made from toxic chemicals, but it is worth noting that it doesn’t hold any of these endorsements, and there is a noticeable ‘new product’ smell.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the ALDI Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Chiropedic Bed Base) with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart.
We do not recommend a bed frame with flexible/posture slats as this may not provide adequate support for this mattress. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.
Furthermore, we do not recommend the ALDI Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may also void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
In terms of size options, the ALDI Mattress is available in 5 sizes (king, queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accomodate all sleeping arrangements. This is a larger size range than the Kmart Mattress and the Big W Mattress.

Final verdict
The ALDI Mattress lacks the quality and comfort that most people would require on a nightly basis. Its value proposition is noteworthy though (see prices further down) so it may be serviceable for those of us who aren’t fussy, or for temporary sleep arrangements.
