Åbygda Mattress Review
The Åbygda Mattress is a basic foam mattress with a relatively low height. It has a medium-firm feel and is roll packed.
Purchase and delivery
The Åbygda Mattress can be purchased through the IKEA website or at any of their 12 stores Australia-wide. Delivery costs will depend on your location, but a typical delivery cost to a metropolitan area is $49.
This mattress has a plain appearance with a white colour theme. It only sits 16cm high which is lower than most foam mattresses.
Comfort and support
The Åbygda Mattress uses an outer cover made of 100 % polyester (100% recycled) that also includes ticking (cloth) underneath. This ticking is helps to add softness to the mattress.
The main body of the mattress includes a layer of polyurethane foam (28 kg/cubic metre) and a layer of polyurethane memory foam 50 kg/cubic metre. These foam layer gives a spongy feel that offers reasonable pressure relief.
This mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, its suitability will vary between individuals. Our team rated it a 7 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
Not surprisingly, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress for heavier people (over 100kgs). The volume of foam may not provide adequate comfort or support.
The Åbygda Mattress doesn’t respond well to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be difficult.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality of this mattress is below average. The materials used are unsophisticated and the foam feels basic.
The overall build quality of this mattress is below average.
Not surprisingly, edge support is deficient, so care must be taken to not roll off the edge during sleep.
Like many foam mattresses, the mattress isolates motion well. So, partner disturbance is minimal. As always though, motion transfer will vary depending on the mattress size and the size of the occupants of the bed.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Ågotnes Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty.
We do not recommend the Åbygda Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Åbygda Mattress is available in all 4 sizes (queen, double, single and 180 x 200 cm) so it should suit all adult sleeping situations.

Final verdict
The Åbygda Mattress an unsophisticated foam mattress that is best suited for temporary sleep arrangements. Its low profile height makes it applicable for bunk beds and caravans.

All of our mattresses can be used immediately, but keep in mind that a packaged mattress only regains its full shape and comfort after approximately 72 hours. Your body also needs a couple of weeks to adapt to the new mattress.
Sometimes the mattress has a noticeable smell when you open the packaging. The smell isn’t harmful or toxic and disappears over time. Airing and vacuuming the mattress helps to eliminate the smell faster.
Care instructions can be found inside the cover.
