Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress Review

The Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress (sold as ‘Spa Sensations by Zinus’) forms the mid range option in Kmart’s mattress range that also includes the entry level Kmart Mattress, and the flagship Kmart Hybrid Mattress.

Purchase and delivery

The Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress falls into the ‘mattress in a box’ category and can be ordered online through the Kmart website. It cannot be ordered ‘click and collect’ style so online orders will be delivered to your door (see delivery times and fees in our ‘Delivery’ section further down).

It is worth noting that the Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress is only available for sale in NSW, QLD, VIC, WA, SA, and TAS (as well as the North Island of New Zealand).

This mattress was reasonably easy to remove from its packaging, and took 5-10 minutes to unpack. We recommend having two people on hand to help unpack a mattress in a box, and (as usual), we allowed the mattress to decompress for 24 hours before testing.

Visually, the Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress has a simple, classic style. It uses a white and grey colour theme with nice (brand name) embroidery at the head of the mattress.

Comfort and support

The top cover of this mattress is made from a polyester jacquard stretch knit fabric which includes multiple ‘tufts’ throughout. It doesn’t feel quite as fancy as many of its more expensive competitors, but it doesn’t scream cheap either.

This cover sits over a layer of ‘Nurest quick response’ foam and a high-density foam. This comfort layer feels dense, and moulds to the body tightly. With that said, it absorbs body weight nicely and pressure relief should be adequate for most.

There is a slight element of dipping (with heavier sections of the body), but considering its price, we won’t be too picky with that. In fact, the level of comfort here is quite impressive in context of price.

This mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but understandably, this suitability will vary between individuals.

Our team rated it as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 6.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.

Sitting under this comfort layer is a pocket spring system that is listed as the same as in the Kmart Hybrid Mattress. If this is true, the spring system does feel different in this mattress, but not in a good way. It has a characteristic flimsy and cheap feel, and the mattress does show its price here.

Nevertheless, it may offer adequate spinal support for many and it should accomodate people of most sizes.

The Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress responds well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness in the ‘optimal’ zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be too much trouble.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

The overall build quality and craftsmanship of the Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress is substandard, but reasonable when you consider its price. You can feel the springs through the sides of the mattress (an indicator of low mattress quality) and edge support is noticeably lacking.

Partner disturbance is noticeable also but motion transfer will depend on the size of the occupants of the bed. The materials and finishings also demonstrate its lack of refinement, but it is a significant improvement from the original Kmart Mattress.

One wonders if Kmart considered our scathing review of their first mattress (the Kmart Mattress) to market, before adding this to their range.

The Nurest foam used in the Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress is certified as non-toxic by CertiPUR-US, giving this mattress an impressive selling point in terms of health. This product also has a solid 10 year warranty, far superior to the 5 year warranty offered by the (entry level) Kmart Mattress.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Sleep Republic Pro Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).

A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.

The Kmart Euro Top Pocket Spring Mattress is far from sophisticated, but with all things considered, it offers decent value. It would be ideal for a budget conscious shopper, or for a guest bedroom.
