The Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress is a good value option in the mattress in a box market. It is comfortable, supportive, and comes with an impressive collection of free bedding.

Purchase and delivery

As with other mattress in a box products, the Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress can be ordered online (through the Zen Sleep website) and it will arrive at your door in a compact box. Delivery is free and the mattress can be delivered Australia-wide (see delivery times below in our ‘Delivery’ section).

The box arrived in reasonable condition and removing the Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress from its packaging was little trouble. The quality and appearance of the plastic packaging was substandard (cloudy yellow colour), but nevertheless, it should only take 5-10 minutes to unpack.

As we alluded to earlier, the mattress comes with free bedding (2 pillows, a mattress protector, and a sheet set). These items are included inside the box, so your delivery won’t involve any additional packages.

As usual, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box, and we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before testing.

Aesthetically, the Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress has a sleek, modern appearance. It uses a grey and black colour theme and the Zen Sleep embroidery looks rather stylish.

Comfort and support

The Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress uses a TENCEL fabric cover that feels cool, soft, and breathable. This cover sits over a layer of latex and a layer of cool memory foam – a fairly common combination of comfort layers.

The top comfort layer absorbs bodyweight evenly and should offer enough pressure relief for most. The mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but this suitability will vary between individuals.

It is comfortable, supportive, and comes with an impressive collection of free bedding.

Our team rated it as a ‘medium-firm’ feel and a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.

These comfort layers sit over a 7 zone pocket spring system that supports the spine well in all positions. This spring unit feels stable and fairly well balanced.

The Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress responds well to normal sleep movements and we rated its level of responsiveness in the optimal zone. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) shouldn’t be too much trouble.

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

Edge support on the Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress is reasonable. This is thanks to an 8cm ‘foam encasement’ that does indicate Zen Sleep’s attention to detail.

Partner disturbance is not significant so a restless partner shouldn’t cause too many issues. It’s worth noting though that motion transfer on a mattress will depend on the size of the mattress and on the size of the occupants of the bed.

The Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress comes with a handy 100 night trial period. This means that you can return the mattress for a full refund if you are not satisfied. The mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty, so you’ll have plenty of after-sale security.

The free bedding that comes with this mattress is noteworthy. The two free pillows, free mattress protector, and free sheets are worth around $270, so this certainly strengthens the value for money proposition when you buy this mattress.

It’s also worth noting that the comfort foams used in the Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress are certified as non-toxic by CertiPUR-US®, one of the world’s leading authorities in foam and fabric testing.

What bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress to be used with a solid bed frame (such as the Chiropedic Bed Base), or a solid ensemble base (with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart).

A bed frame (with flexible slats) may still be adequate, but again, we strongly recommend that the distance between each slat is less than 8 cm. Use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will usually void the mattress warranty.

Chiropedic Bed Base

Furthermore, we do not recommend the Zen Sleep Hybrid Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may void the warranty. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
