Purchase and delivery
As mentioned above, the ALDI Mattress can be purchased at ALDI stores during specific Special Buys periods. It’s worth noting that even during these periods, the ALDI Mattress may not be available in certain locations.
The ALDI MAs with other bed in a box products, this mattress comes compressed (by heavy machinery) into a cardboard box.
We purchased our queen size ALDI Mattress from the ALDI Busselton store (WA) and managed to fit the box into a small SUV (Volkswagen Tiguan). We would highly recommend having two (strong) people on hand to place the box into a car.
The box (queen size mattress) weighs 40 kgs with dimensions of 158 cm high, 32 cm wide, and 32 cm deep, so make sure your vehicle has the necessary space.
Keep in mind that most other mattress in a box products in Australia offer free delivery to your door.
Removing the ALDI Mattress from its packaging was relatively straight forward, but again, we recommend having two people available to unpack a mattress in a box. Unpacking this mattress should only take 5-10 minutes, and we allowed it to decompress for 24 hours before testing.
Keep in mind that there will be a substantial amount of packaging (cardboard and plastic) to dispose of. So, some planning may be required along with a fair bit of bin space.
In terms of appearance, the ALDI Mattress presents with a simple, unsophisticated appearance. It sits 24cm high which is below average in terms of height, but still within normal limits.
It has a white, black, and grey colour theme along with Estelle brand embroidery at the base of the mattress.
Mattress construction
As mentioned above, the ALDI Mattress is an innerspring mattress that consists of multiple comfort layers and a pocket spring system.
1. Polyester fabric cover
The top cover of this mattress contains a polyester jacquard quilted fabric.
2. Memory foam layer
This layer of memory foam is added for enhanced back support.
3. Comfort foam layer
This layer of of plush comfort foam is included to give an extra layer of comfort.
4. Pocket springs
As with most pocket spring systems, this support structure is designed to provide support and stability during sleep.
Comfort and support
Although the top fabric cover of the ALDI Mattress feels a little basic, it does have a soft and smooth consistency.
The comfort layers also feel unsophisticated. Although the product description claims that the ‘plush Eurotop design for extra comfort’, our testing revealed a hardness in all sleeping positions. Essentially, the mattress is not particularly comfortable.
The mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers) but this suitability will vary between individuals.
When it comes to a specific firmness rating, all of our reviewers agreed that this mattress has a medium-firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Firmness rating
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the ALDI Mattress on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
The ALDI Mattress uses a pocket spring system that feels flimsy and very basic. Its level of spinal support is unconvincing and it wouldn’t be suitable for larger people (over 100 kgs).
The ALDI Mattress responds excessively to normal sleep movements, which is typical of cheap spring systems. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) will feel unstable and disruptive.
Responsiveness
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
As you would expect, the build quality and craftsmanship of the ALDI Mattress is very ordinary. The quality of the foams and fabrics is of a questionable standard, as is the quality of the stitching and finishings.
You can also easily feel the springs through the side of the mattress, a strong indicator of (poor) mattress quality. As we alluded to earlier, its aesthetic presentation is rather dull.
With that said, the ALDI Mattress does include side handles which is pleasantly surprising for a mattress at this price point. Side handles will always make carrying or transporting a mattress easier.
Edge support is also poor, so the mattress perimeter may not provide a stable surface for sleeping or sitting.
In terms of partner disturbance, the spring system in the ALDI Mattress don’t isolate motion well at all. So, a restless partner will likely cause some disruption during sleep.
With that said, motion transfer may vary. A larger mattress (e.g. king size) will usually involve lower amounts of motion transfer. Partner disturbance will also depend on the size of the occupants of the bed.
As we alluded to earlier, the main selling point of the ALDI Mattress is its extraordinary low price. A queen size mattress sells for $259, quite remarkable when you consider that the average mattress in a box in Australia sells for around $1,000.
This price alone, will be enough to convince many shoppers of its value. And fair enough.
It’s important to note though, that the ALDI Mattress comes with a number of limitations that need to be considered before you get seduced by its low price.
The ALDI Mattress comes with a number of limitations that need to be considered before you get seduced by its low price.
Along with its mediocre levels of quality, comfort, and support, its 1 year warranty is significantly inferior to most of its competitors (who generally offer a 10 year warranty).
Furthermore, the ALDI Mattress does not come with a ‘free trial period’ – most of ALDI’s competitors offer a trial period of around 100 nights, and they will also come and collect your mattress from your home as part of the refund process.
Another thing to consider with the ALDI Mattress is its lack of any ‘non-toxic’ or eco-friendly certifications. Most reputable mattress in a box products have been certified by companies such as CertiPUR-US and GECA who have tested mattresses for toxicity, harmful chemicals, and environmental sustainability.
Now we aren’t suggesting that the ALDI Mattress is made from toxic chemicals, but it is worth noting that it doesn’t hold any of these certifications.
Like many new mattresses, we did notice a strong ‘new product’ smell that persisted for around 1 week.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the ALDI Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.
We don’t recommend the ALDI Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress components. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
As we touched on above, the ALDI Mattress does not come with a free trial period. So unlike most other beds in a box, you won’t be able to return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied.
ALDI does mention that it ‘will refund or replace any non-grocery specials within 60 days’. However, this is only applicable if the mattress has not been opened.
This mattress also comes with a 1 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is far inferior to the typical warranty length of many of its online competitors (10 years).
Available sizes
The ALDI Mattress is available in 4 sizes (queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accommodate most sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2024.
Final verdict
Despite its incredibly low price, the ALDI Mattress lacks the quality and comfort that many would require on a nightly basis.
With that said, it should be serviceable for guest rooms, temporary sleep arrangements, or for those who simply aren’t fussy.
