Purchase and delivery

How do I buy the ALDI Mattress?

Unlike most mattress in a box brands, the ALDI Mattress is only available during selected ALDI Special Buys promotions. Even during these promotional periods, stock can be limited and availability may vary between stores.

Because the mattress is sold exclusively in-store, you’ll need to transport it home yourself. We purchased a queen size ALDI Mattress from ALDI and found that the boxed mattress fitted comfortably inside a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV. At 32.6kg, however, we would still recommend having two people available to lift and transport it safely.

Like many mattresses today, the ALDI Mattress arrives compressed and rolled inside a cardboard box. Unpacking is straightforward and should take no more than 5-10 minutes, after which we recommend allowing the mattress to fully expand for around 24 hours before use.

ALDI Mattress

As expected, unpacking generates a reasonable amount of cardboard and plastic packaging, so it’s worth planning ahead for disposal.

As we touched on above, ALDI does not offer home delivery for this mattress. Many competing mattress in a box brands include free delivery to your door as standard, making the purchasing process considerably more convenient.

Aesthetics and presentation

What does it look like in real life?

For a mattress at this price point, the ALDI Mattress presents reasonably well. It features a modern white and charcoal colour scheme with a quilted comfort layer and subtle SOHL branding.

At approximately 25cm in height, it is slightly thinner than many premium pocket spring mattresses, although this is fairly typical for a low cost model.

The overall fit and finish are neat, with consistent stitching and well-applied edge piping. While the materials don’t have the premium look or feel of more expensive mattresses, the presentation is respectable given its budget price.

Mattress construction

What’s inside the ALDI Mattress?

The ALDI Mattress combines basic comfort materials with a pocket spring support system. Its construction is relatively simple, reflecting its budget price point.

1. Quilted cover

The mattress features a quilted polyester and viscose cover made using bamboo jacquard fabric. This forms the top surface of the mattress.

2. Memory foam layer

Beneath the cover is a 2cm memory foam layer, designed to provide pressure relief and contour gently to the body.

3. Comfort foam layer

A layer of comfort foam sits below the memory foam, providing additional cushioning before reaching the support core.

4. Pocket spring support system

The support core consists of a 20cm pocket spring system, designed to provide the primary support for the sleeper while allowing each spring to move independently.

Overall, the construction is straightforward and includes the key components found in many entry-level pocket spring mattresses. However, the quality of the materials and overall design are considerably more basic than those found in most premium mattress in a box products.

Comfort and support

What’s it like to sleep on the ALDI Mattress?

The sleep surface feels reasonably soft to the touch, although the comfort layers are fairly shallow and lack the cushioning found in higher quality pocket spring mattresses.

During our testing, the mattress felt noticeably firm and offered only modest pressure relief. Side sleepers, in particular, may find that the comfort layers don’t provide enough cushioning around the shoulders and hips, while back and stomach sleepers are likely to find the mattress more accommodating.

All of our expert reviewers agreed on the firmness level, with a consensus rating of 7.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).

Firmness rating

Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.

Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.

We tested the ALDI Mattress on the Sleep Republic Deluxe Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.

The pocket spring system provides a basic level of support, but it lacks the stability and refinement of higher quality spring systems. Larger individuals (approximately 100kg and above) may find that the support is insufficient, particularly over extended use.

The ALDI Mattress is also highly responsive, with the spring system rebounding quickly during movement. While some responsiveness is desirable, we found that this mattress sits above the optimal range, making movement feel somewhat bouncy and increasing disturbance from a partner.

Responsiveness

Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.

The finer details

What else should I know?

As you would expect at this price point, the overall build quality of the ALDI Mattress is fairly basic. The foams, fabrics and pocket spring system are all entry-level components, although the mattress is assembled neatly and presents reasonably well.

One feature we were pleasantly surprised to see was the inclusion of four side handles (two on each side). These make rotating and transporting the mattress considerably easier and are a welcome addition on such an inexpensive product.

Edge support is adequate but unremarkable. The perimeter compresses noticeably when sitting or lying near the edge of the mattress, making it feel less stable than many higher-quality pocket spring mattresses.

Motion isolation is also fairly limited. While the pocket spring system does reduce some movement between sleeping partners, we found that normal movements were still transmitted across the mattress more than we would expect from a premium pocket spring design.

In terms of price, the ALDI Mattress is unquestionably one of the cheapest mattresses available in Australia. For many shoppers this low price will be its biggest attraction. For guest rooms, temporary accommodation, or occasional use, it represents excellent value.

The ALDI Mattress is unquestionably one of the cheapest mattresses available in Australia.

However, buyers should also consider what is sacrificed to achieve such a low price. Compared with most established mattress in a box brands, the ALDI Mattress uses more basic materials, carries a much shorter warranty, offers no in-home sleep trial, and does not advertise independent non-toxic certifications such as CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX.

Finally, we detected a noticeable “new mattress” odour after unpacking. While this gradually dissipated, it remained detectable for around one week during our testing.

Bed base compatibility

What type of bed base should I use?

As with most mattresses, we recommend the ALDI Mattress be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.

A bed base with solid slats such as the Sleep Republic Deluxe Bed Base, would also be very suitable.

Koala Paddington Bed Base

We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation will void the mattress warranty.

We don’t recommend the ALDI Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress components. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.

It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.

Trial period and warranty

What happens if I don’t like it?

Unlike most online mattress brands, the ALDI Mattress does not include a home sleep trial. This means that once the mattress has been opened and expanded, you won’t be able to return it simply because you don’t like the feel or comfort.

While ALDI states that it will refund or replace unopened Special Buys products within 60 days, this policy does not apply once the mattress has been removed from its packaging.

The ALDI Mattress is backed by a 12-month warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship. Although this provides some peace of mind, we would anticipate that claiming a warranty issue on this mattress would be challenging.

The warranty also falls well short of the 10-year warranties that are now standard across most reputable mattress in a box brands.

If you are looking for a mattress with a generous home trial and a longer warranty, see our list of Australia’s Top 15 Best Mattress in a Box.

Available sizes

What size options are available?

The ALDI Mattress is available in 4 sizes (queen, double, king single, and single size) so it should accommodate most sleeping arrangements.

Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2026. Again please note that the ALDI Mattress is available in 4 of these sizes.

Prices

How much does the ALDI Mattress cost?

Here are the retail prices of the ALDI Mattress.

Retail Prices

  • Double Mattress: $199
  • King Single Mattress: $179
  • Single Mattress: $149

Did you know?

If you sleep on your mattress for eight hours a night over ten years, you’ll spend almost 30,000 hours using it!

Final verdict

Is this the right mattress for you?

At just $239 for a queen size, it’s fair to say that the ALDI Mattress offers exceptional value for money. ALDI deserves credit for making a pocket spring mattress so affordable and accessible.

While we certainly wouldn’t describe it as a premium mattress, it’s also far from the worst mattress we’ve tested. For guest rooms, temporary accommodation, children’s bedrooms, or shoppers on a very tight budget, the ALDI Mattress is a serviceable option.

However, there are some important trade-offs to consider. Unlike most online mattress brands, you’ll need to transport the mattress home yourself, there’s no in-home sleep trial if it doesn’t suit you, the warranty is limited to 12 months, and the mattress does not advertise independent health certifications.

If your budget allows, we would highly recommend spending a few hundred dollars more for either the Boutique Mattress or Osteo Support Mattress. These offer noticeably higher levels of comfort, support, build quality and overall refinement, while also including free home delivery, generous sleep trials and substantially longer warranties.

Ultimately, if your budget is strictly limited, the ALDI Mattress is a reasonable purchase. But for most people, we believe the additional investment in a higher-quality mattress will be worthwhile over the many years you’ll spend sleeping on it.
