Åkrehamn Mattress Review
The Åkrehamn Mattress is a rather unremarkable foam mattress that has a firm feel.
Purchase and delivery
The Åkrehamn Mattress can be purchased through the IKEA website or at any of their 12 stores Australia-wide. Delivery costs will depend on your location, but a typical delivery cost to a metropolitan area is $49.
This mattress has a plain appearance with a white colour theme. It sits 20cm high which is lower than many other foam mattresses.
Comfort and support
The Åkrehamn Mattress uses an outer cover made of 100% polyester that also includes top ticking (100% polyester), and underside ticking (100% polypropylene).
Additional comfort materials include highly resilient polyurethane foam (cold foam) 35 kg/cubic metre, polyurethane memory foam 50 kg/cubic metre, and polyurethane foam 28 kg/cubic metre.
Despite the comfort fillings, this mattress has a firm and arguably hard feel. It would most likely suit back sleepers, but it may also suit side sleepers and stomach sleepers. Understandably though, this suitability will vary between individuals.
Our expert reviewers all agreed that this mattress has a firm feel. By majority vote, we settled on a 8 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest).
Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort. Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies.
The foam components feel basic but should provide adequate back support for most people.
The Åkrehamn Mattress doesn’t respond particularly well to to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
The overall build quality of this mattress is average at best. The mattress construction and materials are basic and the foam components feel unsophisticated.
The overall build quality of this mattress is average at best.
Not surprisingly for a foam mattress, edge support is lacking, so users may not be able to utilise the entire surface of the mattress.
Partner disturbance is noticeable, but not significant. As always though, motion transfer will vary depending on the mattress size and the size of the occupants of the bed.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Åkrehamn Mattress to be used on a bed base with flat panel slats such as the Koala Paddington Bed Base.
A bed base with solid slats (with slats no longer than 8 cm apart) such as the Chiropedic Bed Base, would also be very suitable.
We would advise against using a bed base with flexible (posture) slats as this type of base may not provide adequate support. Ultimately, the use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty.
We do not recommend the Åkrehamn Mattress to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Available sizes
The Åkrehamn Mattress is available in 4 sizes (queen, double, single, and 180x200cm) so it should suit most sleeping arrangements.
