Purchase and delivery
The Happy Wombat Plush+ can be conveniently ordered online, through the Happy Wombat website. Delivery is free, and the mattress can be delivered Australia-wide (see full delivery details in our ‘Delivery’ section further down).
The box arrived in in good condition, and removing the mattress from its packaging was fairly straight forward. As always, we recommend having two people on hand to help unpack a mattress in a box.
We allowed 24 hours for the mattress to decompress before conducting our testing.
Aesthetically, the Happy Wombat Plush+ presents well with a warm, natural vibe. It uses a beige and brown colour theme, and its product labels give it a nice touch.
Mattress construction
The top cover of this mattress is made of a natural bamboo fabric that feels noticeably soft and smooth.
This cover sits over a reasonably deep (10cm) comfort section that includes a layer of Visco Air Gel and 2 layers of high density foam. This comfort layer is easily distinguishable from the rest of the mattress.
The spring system used in the Happy Wombat Plush+ is a 9 zone, micro pocket spring system. The edges of the mattress contain a high resistance, 80mm foam box construction. This is designed to strengthen edge support.
Comfort and support
The top comfort layer feels noticeably dense and spongy. It is comfortable and absorbs body weight nicely, but the ‘sponginess’ doesn’t respond too well to normal sleep movements. This could make it a little difficult to change sleeping positions.
With that said, this mattress should suit all sleeping positions (side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers). Understandably, this suitability will vary between individuals.
We rated the Happy Wombat Plush+ as a ‘medium’ feel and a 5.5 / 10 on the firmness scale (with 10 being the firmest). Please note that our firmness ratings are just a guide and they do not necessarily relate to comfort.
Furthermore, our firmness ratings are assigned based on Bedbuyer’s testing process and these may differ from firmness ratings given by individual companies. Mattress firmness will also vary depending on the type of bed base used.
We tested the Happy Wombat Plush+ on the Chiropedic Bed Base which is a good quality bed base with rigid slats.
The spring system used in the Happy Wombat Plush+ offers good back support and should accommodate people of all sizes. Partner disturbance is noticeable, but certainly not excessive.
As we alluded to above, the Happy Wombat Plush+ doesn’t respond particularly well to normal sleep movements. In basic terms, this means that changing sleep positions (and intimate activities) may be easier on other mattresses.
Please note that our responsiveness scales are just a guide and preferred responsiveness levels will vary between individuals. It’s worth noting also that innerspring mattresses are generally more responsive than foam mattresses.
The finer details
In terms of craftsmanship, this mattress is respectable. It has a ‘full edge box’ construction ensures that enhances edge support, and its materials and finishings are of good quality.

With all of this in mind, you can feel safe bringing this product into your home.
What bed base should I use?
As with most mattresses, we recommend the Happy Wombat Plush+ to be used with a bed base with rigid slats (not flexible/posture slats) with the slats no longer than 8 cm apart.
A base that we would recommend to be used with the Happy Wombat Plush+ is the Chiropedic Bed Base.
We do not recommend the Happy Wombat Plush+ to be used with an adjustable (electric) bed base as this may cause damage to the mattress. Here is our full list of mattresses that are compatible with an adjustable bed base.
It’s worth noting here that use of an unsupportive mattress foundation may void the mattress warranty. Furthermore, mattress firmness, performance, and durability will vary with different bed bases.
Trial period and warranty
The Happy Wombat Plush+ comes with a 30 night trial period. This is inferior to a typical trial period offering of many other beds in a box, but it still means that you can return the mattress for a refund if you are not satisfied. Naturally, conditions do apply.
This mattress also comes with a 20 year warranty to cover any faulty materials or workmanship. This is far superior to the warranty period of similarly priced products.

The Happy Wombat Plush+ is available in 3 sizes (king, queen, and double) so it should suit most adult sleeping situations.

Final verdict
The Happy Wombat Plush+ is a comfortable mattress and its Australian made status will appeal to many. Its top comfort layer offers nice pressure relief, but it may not suit those who prefer a responsive, bouncy feel.
