Quokka Beds Floating Bed Base Review
The Quokka Beds Floating Bed Base is hand made in Australia and is available in a number of timber options, height options, and headboard options. It is fairly easy to assemble and offers a lifetime warranty.
Purchase and delivery
The Quokka Beds Floating Bed Base can be ordered online (through the Quokka Beds website) and will arrive at your door in a number of boxes. Delivery is free Australia wide, and shipping times will vary from 5-10 days.
For more information, see our ‘Delivery’ section further down.
This base can be ordered in two different types of timber – Rose Gum or Tasmanian Oak. Rose Gum can be ordered in clear, walnut, or teak colours, wheres Tasmanian Oak can be ordered in clear or white wash.
This product can also be ordered in 3 different heights – low (19cm), standard (29cm) and high (39cm). It can also be ordered with no headboard, a straight headboard, or a curved headboard.
As you can see, there are many options to choose from so it should be easy to find something that matches your bedroom decor and preference.
Assembling
The Quokka Beds Floating Bed Base is relatively easy to assemble but it may take some fiddling, depending on your assembling skills. Once it has been removed from its packaging, it should only take 5-10 minutes to put together.
In terms of tools, the assembling process only requires an Allen key (included) but we would still recommend having two people on hand. The corner connections do require some careful positioning and the large sizes (e.g. king) have long support beams.
There are a few stages involved, and care must be taken to ensure that the floating beam connects to the perimeter beams in the right configuration.
You can see a quick video of the assembling process in this video below:
Once assembled correctly, the Quokka Beds Floating Bed Base can accommodate a total weight of 600kgs.
Stability and practicality
The Quokka Beds Floating Bed Base (queen size) uses 28 individual slats, 14 on each side. A king size contains 42 slats and has 2 support beams, giving it excellent support and stability.
The slats sit in grooves within the base, but are not securely connected or attached. As a result, they can become easily displaced, particularly when a mattress is placed on the base.
Nevertheless, the slats feel strong and are 9cm wide. The space between the slats is 4.5cm, which is far less than many other bed bases that we have tested. The lower the space between the slats will typically relate to better support and stability for the mattress.
The dimensions of this base should match the dimensions of the corresponding mattress size, so there won’t be a protruding ledge to potentially bang your shins on.
The overall quality of this base is very good, and the slats should allow for good ventilation between the occupants of the bed, the mattress, and the base.
Available sizes
The Quokka Beds Floating Bed Base is available in all 8 sizes (super king, king, queen, double, long double, king single, long single, and single) so it should accommodate most sleeping arrangements.
Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2023.
Final verdict
The Quokka Beds Floating Bed Base is a nice bed base that gives a unique, floating appearance.
The assembling process does require some care, but overall, this is a high quality product that will accommodate the weight of almost any person/s or any mattress.

Choosing Your Natural Wooden Bed Frame
All our timber come from certified managed plantation forests, which means all trees are replanted for a controlled and sustainable supply of wood. Each of our timber options are strong, sustainable and durable – so the choice usually just comes down to colour.
Rose Gum
A native Australian hardwood, Rose Gum is a sustainable and consistent timber now grown in South American certified plantations. You can opt to leave it Clear (a striking pinkish-yellow-brown), or we can apply one of our undercoat stains (Walnut or Teak).
Tasmanian Oak
A native Australian hardwood, Tasmanian Oak has a more traditional wood colour and grain. Sourced only from certified plantations in Australia – this timber has been a sought after and staple of Australian furniture for many decades.
Due to the natural beauty of Tasmanian Oak, we only like to offer this wood in a Clear finish (no stain).
Straight headboard
Our straight headboard is great for a solid, minimalist and clean look for any bedroom.
Curved headboard
Our curved headboard with a subtle dip in the middle is great for a modern and unique look.
