Each year, Bedbuyer decides on Australia’s best mattress, a product that presents the best overall package – this being the prestigious ‘Mattress of the Year’ award.
This is always a difficult task, but our review team was very comfortable in giving the nod to the Silent Night Onyx Mattress in 2021. Congratulations to Comfort Sleep Bedding (manufacturer), and Beds n Dreams (retailer) for taking out this award in 2021.
Silent Night Onyx – 2021 Mattress of the Year
The Silent Night Onyx is Australian made and is a true leader in the retail mattress market. It immediately gives out a strong sense of refinement and aesthetic appeal. Even before lying on it, this mattress has a distinct presence and gives out a modern, edgy vibe. To see this mattress in ‘real life’, here is our video review:
Mattress construction
The top comfort layer of this mattress is highly sophisticated and is a strong indicator of its level of craftsmanship. It contains an exclusive ‘ICE-TEK’ cooling knit which is a revolutionary, thermo-regulating material. It instantly removes heat from your body, helping to maintain a cool, comfortable sleep temperature. In addition, the top layer contains a premium silk cashmere blend which produces a strong yet luxurious feel.
The top cover of the Silent Night Onyx sits over a combination of premium comfort foam and memory foam which offers exceptional comfort and pressure relief. Comfort Sleep have also added a special ‘open cell layer’ to further assist with ventilation and airflow.
The Silent Night Onyx is a true leader in the retail mattress market.
The Silent Night Onyx possesses an outstanding pocket spring system, namely its 10 Zone Silentpocket™ Dual Coil System. This spring offers supreme body contouring and spinal support, and minimal partner disturbance. It can accommodate people of all sizes with little fuss. The Silent Night Onyx also has excellent edge support, thanks to its Edge Boost™ Foam Boxed Wall – an ultra firm, highly resilient foam box encasement which provides the most robust of mattress perimeters.
Firmness options
The Silent Night Onyx comes in a firm, medium, and plush version. It is rather ‘firm’ range overall, with the plush version not as soft as some other plush options. If you are after a softer mattress range the Neoluxe Vantage Silver would be the perfect alternative.
If you prefer a firm and supportive feel, the firm version of the Silent Night Onyx is ideal. The medium and plush versions offer additional layers of comfort to suit your individual needs.
The finer details
Perhaps what stands out most about this mattress is its ability to maintain a cool sleep temperature, which is relevant for many Australians who have difficulty with ‘sleeping hot’ at night. The Silent Night Onyx is also well-certified as non-toxic and eco-friendly, holding the GECA (Good Environmental Choice Australia) certification.
The Silent Night Onyx offers incredible value and is one of the reasons why Bedbuyer considers this as Australia’s Best Mattress in 2021. Considering the high quality construction and its delightful balance of comfort and support, the Silent Night Onyx represents remarkable value for money. It comes with a 10 year warranty, and we would definitely recommend it for those who want the latest in design and sophistication, without a big hit to the wallet.
Available sizes
The Silent Night Onyx is available in all 7 mattress sizes (super king, king, queen, double, king single, long single, and single) so it will accomodate all adult sleeping situations. Here are Australia’s standard bed (mattress) sizes in 2021.
Summary
The Silent Night Onyx is an outstanding mattress that contains a cool, comfortable top layer, along with a spring system of the highest quality. We were very comfortable in awarding it as Australia’s Best Mattress in 2021. You can try it out at any of Beds n Dreams 32 stores.

Does this mattress come in a Long Single?? Would the pocket springs at the bottom of the mattress be suitable for a slatted base or would they penetrate??
Hi Bev,
Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer!
The Silent Night Onyx Mattress possibly can be specially ordered in a long single size. If you let us know what your closest Beds n Dreams store is, I am happy to check this for you. Their full list of stores is linked here – https://www.bedsndreams.com.au/store-locator/
This mattress should be fine for a slatted base also.
Keep us posted!
The Bedbuyer Team
Hi – I saw the Englander Manhattan in the BednDreams store and the saleman said it was quite similar to the Onyx (dual pocket springs, 10 zone support etc). It felt good for us, but wondering if you’ve had a chance to review?
Hi Andrew,
Yes we have reviewed the Englander Manhattan. Our team really liked it overall (4.2 / 5). Not quite as sophisticated as the Onyx but a very good mattress nevertheless.
We haven’t posted our reviews just yet as we are still awaiting photos from Beds n Dreams, but they should be up soon.
Hope that helps but happy to discuss further!
The Bedbuyer team
Thanks very much. Are you able to go in to a little more detail as to what you guys liked or didn’t like? How did it compare to the Englander Boston?
Hi again Andrew,
We found the Manhattan to be a more ‘advanced’ version of the Boston and worth the extra spend if you can stretch it. Similar feel to the Boston but slightly more comfortable overall.
Let us know how you go!
The Bedbuyer team
Hello, really like your site, Is this mattress suitable with slats?
Hi Leigh,
Thanks for visiting Bedbuyer and really glad you have found our site useful.
The Silent Night Onyx Mattress should go fine on a slat base (with flexible) slats as long as:
1. It is in good condition and screwed together tightly
2. The spaces between the slats do not exceed 8cm
3. There is appropriate (central) supportive beams
Hope that helps but let us know if you have any further questions!

Hi Maree,
Yes, the Silent Night Onyx Mattress can be ordered in a ‘super king’ size. We would recommend visiting your local Beds n Dreams store to see what firmness suits you best (firm, medium, plush) and to place your order:

Just mention ‘Bedbuyer’ in-store to claim the special Bedbuyer price ($3419 plus $80 delivery).

Hi I would like to know the Mattress height
Hi Chris,
The Silent Night Onyx Mattress is 38cm high.
Hope that helps but please don’t hesitate if you have any further questions!
The Bedbuyer team
G’day, can you use an electric blanket with the Silent Night Onxy plush mattress?
Hi Peter,
An electric blanket on the Silent Night Onyx should be fine, but we would recommend placing a mattress protector on the mattress, then the electric blanket, then the fitted sheet. You could also confirm this in-store at Beds n Dreams – store list linked here.
Hope that helps but please don’t hesitate if you wanted to discuss further.

Hi i was looking to buy the Silent Night Onyx Mattress “Queen” but it look like the specials are over , went on there web sit but code does not work.
i was looking to buy one before Christmas.
Shane
Hi Shane,
You can certainly still claim the price of a Silent Night Onyx (Queen size) for $2,319. You won’t be able to buy through the Beds n Dreams website at the moment (prices not on sale) so you can either call/text Beds n Dreams or visit your local store to place your order. Just mention ‘Bedbuyer’ to claim this special price.
Hope that helps but please don’t hesitate if you need any further help. Would love to hear how you go!

Hi,
I have an Eva King Size mattress that I’m finding too hot and too firm. Would you recommend the Silent Night Onyx medium or plush? Any other mattresses I should consider?
Thanks,
James
Hi James,
Sorry to hear that the Eva Mattress is not working for you.
If you go for the Silent Night Onyx, we would definitely recommend the plush version. While you’re in Beds n Dreams, the Silent Night London range (perhaps the medium) would be worth considering too. Both very nice, Australian made mattresses that have both been designed for cooling.
Just mention Bedbuyer in-store to claim our special pricing. The full list of Beds n Dreams stores is linked here.
Hope that helps but please let us know how you go!
The Bedbuyer team
Thanks
Hi Bedbuyer team. My husband and I loved the feel of the firm version of this mattress but unfortunately due to my allergy to coconut it will be unsuitable for me (the manufacturer use coconut oil in their foam). We felt the dual springs, lower pocket springs and micro upper springs seemed to set this mattress apart from others. Is their other mattresses that have a similar construction and feel to this mattress that I can start researching for safe use with my Allergy. Thanking you in advance for all your help.
Hi Jody,
Thanks for your comment and sorry to hear about your coconut oil allergy.
If you and your partner liked the feel of the Silent Night Onyx mattress firm, the Neoluxe Vantage Silver (firm) is of similar construction (dual springs) with a slightly softer feel – Different brand but also made by the same supplier (Comfort Sleep) so unsure if they would use a different oil in their foam for this one? Worth checking!
The Hypnos Balmoral firm might also be one to consider. Excellent mattress, a bit more expensive but made by another Australian manufacturer in Queensland (Mattress Resources).
Lastly, the Noa Luxe Mattress also has a similar construction with a dual layer of springs/micro springs (not quite as sophisticated as the Balmoral, Onyx and Neoluxe) but could be an option if there is coconut oil in the previous models.
Hope that helps and gives you some direction, but would love to hear how you go!
Kind Regards,
The Bedbuyer team
Is there a walk in store in Brisbane where i can see this mattress?
Hi Graham,
Yes, you can view this mattress at any Beds n Dreams store – QLD stores are linked here.
Hope that helps but would love to hear how you go!

Are any of your recommendations available from retailers in Bunbury W.A.
Hi Heather,
In terms of any mattresses (in out Top 10) being available at a physical retail store in (or near) Bunbury:
1. SleepTailor Luxe – Snooze, Mandurah
2. Orthokinetic Signature Monarch – Amart Furniture, Mandurah
Due to your location, your retail store options are limited, so you may want to consider buying a mattress online (with a free trial period). There are many great value options in this category, and we would recommend viewing our article Australia’s Top 12 Mattress in a Box (in 2021) – article linked here.
Hope that helps but please let us know if you would like to discuss further.

Silent Onyx Plush King……….depth please? Seems most manufacturers are reluctant to publish this measurement, do you know why? Seems anything between 28 to 36 cm depending on brand/range/model etc. I have to go instore to ask or measure it myself.
Hi Dneesha,
The Silent Night Onyx (Plush) Mattress is approximately 38 cm high. You can find this information in our review of the Silent Night Onyx (Plush) linked here.
Beds n Dreams actually do list the mattress height on their product page as well.
Hope that helps but please let us know how you go!
