The time has come. You’re waking up stiff and sore. Or you can actually feel the springs in your mattress. Yes, your mattress has reached its used by date. Or maybe you have moved house and you need a new mattress for the guest room. Or maybe your child has graduated into a single bed. Whatever the case, buying a new mattress brings with it confusion, anxiety, and a big hit to your bank account. But not to worry. As Australia’s only independent mattress review site, here are 5 top tips to keep in mind when buying a new mattress.
1. Never pay the full recommended retail price.
The bedding industry is like many others – jewellery, furniture, white goods, audio visual equipment etc. The business model is based on setting an often outrageously high ‘recommended retail price’ (RRP) then offering a ‘special deal’ or ‘sale’ that is significantly less than the RRP to make you feel like you are getting the deal of the century. You’ve heard it from your friends – something like “we got a really good deal!” Well, we hate to be the one to tell you that Santa Clause isn’t real, but this was all cleverly engineered to make a profitable sale while you walk out on cloud nine thinking you got a bargain. The truth is, this psychology is very effective. What we have found is that you can usually negotiate 20-40% off the recommended retail price, depending on the mattress and the time of the year. Having said that though, end of financial year sales, and post Christmas day sales are generally the best times to purchase.
2. Make sure the mattress and base fit into your space.
Most people love the idea of a king or queen mattress but make sure you measure doorways, stairwells, and corridors before you purchase. We have heard many stories of people purchasing their new mattress and base, only to find they couldn’t fit it up the stairs, or they couldn’t fit it through the front gates of their apartment complex. Some buildings are very pokey these days. Make sure you can fit your new purchase into the space you intend it for. Get the tape measure out!
3. Be clear on return policies, delivery times, and warranties.
Many mattresses now will have trial periods or a return system where if you are not fully satisfied with your new mattress, you can get a full refund or have store credit to choose another one. These return policies will vary greatly, so make sure you are very clear on this before you buy. Delivery times can also vary from a few days to a few months. Ask if the delivery includes pick up of your old mattress. Develop a relationship with someone at the store to a level that you feel comfortable going back to that person if need be. Be clear on the conditions of the warranty as these vary as well. Don’t be made to feel uncomfortable when asking about these details – you’re spending a good amount of money here.
4. Take your time when shopping.
We get it. Mattress shopping is probably not everyone’s idea of fun on a Saturday afternoon. For most it’s painful and time consuming. But this is something that you will likely be sleeping on for around 10 years. Something that is going to help you sleep and recover from the stresses of daily life. Whatever your priorities are in life, your mattress does matter. A good night’s sleep does matter. So take the time to lie on each mattress you try out. On your back, on your side, even on your front if that’s how you sleep. If you have a partner, make sure you go together. Roll and turn to test partner disturbance. Is it comfortable? Does it support your body well. Is it soft enough to accommodate any injuries or spinal conditions you have? The point is, don’t rush. Try a range of different mattresses to get a feel for what products are out there. Don’t be afraid to develop a short list and literally ‘sleep on it’.
