We hear you Australia. With so many bedding stores and products to choose from, buying a new mattress is damn confusing. It leaves many of us anxious and hesitant about making a final decision as we don’t want to be stuck with a mattress we don’t like. Well, not to worry. Australia’s largest bedding site gives you our top 5 tips before you make your final purchase. Let’s get started!
1. Never pay the full recommended retail price
The recommended retail price is really just a starting point for you to negotiate the best deal.
It also allows bedding stores to still make a profit during the big sales periods. Outside of these sales periods, we have found you can usually negotiate between 20-40% off the recommended retail price. This is not a hard and fast rule, but it gives you an idea.
If you are not comfortable in ‘negotiating prices’, here is a tip. Let’s say your budget is $1000 and the mattress you really like has a recommended retail price of $1999. An easy question to ask is, ‘What is the closest you can get to $1000?’. Most bedding salespeople want to make the sale, so they will generally do their best to get as close as they can. Naturally, the post-Christmas and end of financial year sales periods are usually the best time to save big. If you are purchasing a mattress in a box online, make sure you contact the company and ask what the best current coupon code is. These coupons also vary throughout the year so make sure you check out our exclusive coupons available all year round! And of course Bedbuyer is always here if you need any advice on prices. Feel free to contact us!
2. Make sure the mattress and base fit into your space
We all love the idea of a big queen or king mattress but make sure you can fit the mattress or base through doorways, stairwells, or lifts. We have heard of many stories of people purchasing a new bed, and then finding they actually couldn’t fit it through a certain space. Some buildings are very pokey these days, so get the tape measure out. One of the advantages of a mattress in a box, is that you can get your new mattress into spaces much more easily. Here are 5 reasons why you may want to consider a mattress in box!
3. Be clear on refunds, returns, and warranties
Before you purchase your new mattress, it is important that are clear on company policies relating to refunds, returns, and warranties. Some bedding retailers offer the chance for you to exchange your mattress within a certain time frame if you decide it doesn’t suit you. Retailers will not generally offer a refund if you simply ‘don’t like’ your mattress.
Most retail store mattresses will have a warranty that covers any obvious defect, but again, make you are clear on these conditions.
Another thing to ask about is delivery times, fees, and old mattress removal. You may be able to negotiate to include these fees in your purchase, but generally, you will have to pay for delivery and old mattress removal.
4. Take your time
It is totally normal to be overwhelmed by the thought of buying a new mattress. There are literally thousands of mattresses available and we totally understand that the process can be painful and confusing. The reality is that this will by something you will sleep on for years to come. It is something that will help your body recover from the stresses of daily life.
Whatever your priorities in life, your mattress does matter. A good night’s sleep does matter.
Take the time to lie on each mattress you try out. On your back, on your side, or even on your front if that’s how you sleep. If you have a partner, make sure you go together. Roll and turn to test partner disturbance. Is it comfortable? Does it support your body well? If you are buying online, make sure you take your time browsing our reviews to see what would suit you best.
